A vaginal speculum is the instrument a healthcare professional uses to hold the vaginal walls open and visualise the cervix during a speculum examination. Across UK primary care and sexual health settings, disposable specula are used for cervical screening, smear sample collection for cytology, and gynaecological assessment. Single-use specula are supplied sterile in individual wrapping, which removes reprocessing between patients and supports infection control. Size selection matters during pelvic exams: NHS sample-taker guidance directs clinicians to fit an appropriately sized speculum for patient comfort and clear cervical access, and most ranges run from small through to large with varying blade lengths. Modern specula are moulded from clear medical-grade plastic, so the lateral walls stay visible throughout the procedure, and a locking mechanism holds the blades once set.
